Remember back in the day when you used to hit up the local arcade for a little R and R? Yeah, those Pac Man machines were the bomb back then. Of course, that was when a video game would cost you a mere quarter. Not any more. Try a dollar to play one measly arcade game. Bring back the classic 80s arcade games. At least we all could afford them. Indeed the video game business is constantly advancing as far as concepts and graphics go, but there is certainly something to be said about plain and simple fun.

Did you have an Atari back in the 80s? I can still remember playing Pitfall on mine. Wow, were those graphics amazing! Okay, if you compare them to what’s on the market these days, the 80s arcade games were not so impressive. However, they did get the job done. You just had to be there to appreciate it. When Nintendo finally came out, it shocked the video game world. 80s arcade games rocketed to a whole new level. Suddenly Pac Man was out and Mario was “The Man.” Now we were dealing with a ton of levels, which eventually turned into a phenomenon for video gamers around the world. I recall battling my little brother in Karate Champ. It’s so renaissance in comparison to the newer Mortal Combat games, but it certainly kept our interest at the time. What was your game of choice?

Anti-Glare Computer Screens

You remember those old green screen computers? I remember being in elementary school and learning to program in BASIC on one. Even at that time, the green screen monochromatic was a little dated, but the teacher assured us that it was the best possible system for our eyes. The four color and sixteen color screens we were using at home, she assured us, would lead to the ruination of our vision. This was far before anyone had heard of anti glare screens, but even back then, there was awareness about the possible harmful effects of computer screens on people’s eyes.

Well, whether or not my 4th grade teacher was right, no one but a complete fanatic uses monochromatic computer screens today. Anti glare screens have become a necessity for the modern computer for many reasons. Many of us use our computers for everything: for work, for email, for movies and video games. The amount of ultraviolet and other dangerous emissions from our computer screens inevitably builds up and does damage to our eyes if we don’t use a screen glare filter. The anti glare screen may not seem to make a big difference if you are just looking at your computer for an hour or two, but multiply that by several hours a day for years and years, and you will see just how much of a problem it can be. But anti glare screens aren’t just useful for safety.

The number one use of anti glare screens is, well, for reducing glare. If daylight is coming through your window at a bad angle, you won’t be able to see what is going on your screen at all. What would you rather do? Would you like to close the shades and stay in artificial light all day? Do you want to have to turn the computer at different angles as the sun makes its transversal across the sky? Or do you use the easy and logical solution of anti glare screens which will eliminate glare, not only from sunlight, but from artificial lighting as well. To me, the choice seems simple. I have anti glare screens on every computer in my house, including my laptops. Although they can be temperamental and fragile, anti glare screens in general really are a great technology. I’m sure the day isn’t far away when they are built into every computer monitor straight out of the factory.

Saab Floor Mats

After about six months of research and test-driving, I bought a Saab. I love this car. Perfect choice. Race it around town and no one pays any attention, underestimating the power and speed by going on looks. Save on gas. Deal with rare and minor adjustments and repairs. I baby the thing, replacing accessories, spit-polish the interior while I wait for the engine to take on a cold day, etc.. But what about when the illustrious Saab floor mats, especially the one on the driver’s floor, curls and bunches, jamming itself under the brake pedal so you can’t brake or bunching around the gas so you can’t accelerate… or de-accelerate? Yanking those errant Saab floor mats back into place while driving is not all that great an idea. Better to re-invest; go online to a popular and reputable site and buy a couple of replacement Saab floor mats — ones that are still heavy, flat (unwrinkled), and therefore have staying power.

This is no great intellectual challenge. You need to just love your Saab enough to settle on a choice of Saab floor mats in pretty much one standard size, design, color, etc… the option offered with the huge and glorious Saab logo. Okay, I exaggerate just a bit. On eBay, when you type in the phrase “Saab floor mats,” you get a return of approximately 291 finds. Fifty percent of these results are for the standard grey and black wool mats, in sets of four, with the huge red lion wearing his crown emblazoned at the center of each mat. This is fine if, as I do, you have a grey and black Saab. Otherwise, you need to drill down, as they say, to find a few other choices. On my search I found a few variations — the dark grey/charcoal rubber mats with the Saab logo formed as part of the mats; straight from the factory (unused) beige/tan Saab floor mats for the Saab convertible; the more generic black, grey, or tan rubber mats that fit, the vendor writes, Plymouth, Pontiac, Porsche, and Saab, for starters, and are heavy (ten pounds?) and durable and, actually, quite handsome pieces.

But then, with some patience and insistence, you will find the variations, the multiple options for Saab floor mats. You will find the picture that reveals an array of colors of mats that fit a range of Saab models — grey, blue, tan, dark grey, maroon, dark tan, or black for 1988, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, and 1998. Okay, so the colors are still understated and plain, and the material is wool on top of rubber, and over time these, too, will bunch and clutter, but they will fit your Saab until you find some neon atrocities made of recycled plastic that wears out faster than the originals bunched. Might be a hard call, might be a no-brainer.

It is strange to see an instrument as universally scorned as the accordion enjoying a resurgence among young people. These days, you can buy accordions and accordion sheet music in almost any music store. Meanwhile, bands like They Might Be Giants, and Tom Waits have had tremendous influence in popularizing the accordion among young, hip kids. What was once the subject of jokes is now virtually challenging the guitar for musical predominance.

I started learning how to play the accordion myself when I was just ten years old. Those days, I had to hide my accordion sheet music from friends, because if they saw me carrying it along with my school books, they would laugh at me. Everyone thought that learning how to play the accordion was an occupation for ridiculous old men from France, and that the squeezebox was for squares. So while they were all playing guitars in bad hard rock bands that sounded virtually identical, I was playing my squeeze box studying polkas, waltzes, Cajun zydeco, and old European folk melodies.

When I got to college, though, things started to change. My skinny, geeky demeanor suddenly was hip and cool to my compatriots. No one wanted to hear the standard lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drums, bass rock power lineup any more. People were looking for something different, something new, or perhaps a new incarnation of something really rather old. I was in the perfect position to put my accordion playing to work. I would do open mikes at first, then as I became more confident, I would start to play accordion shows. I had a band backing me up consisting of mandolin, violin, doumbek, and electric bass, and we’d play the most strange melange of haunting old world music and modern funk this side of San Francisco. It was one of the best times of my life.

Of course, the band didn’t ever completely work out, but it has remained a hobby of mine since then, and we recently took a small tour after completing our most recent album. As I have refined my accordion and song writing skills, and my band mates have grown in their abilities as well, our music has done nothing but improved. I also recently played the accordion at the wedding of my best friend, Arthur, taking a moment to get up on stage with the other musicians and perform his favorite song. Life is perfect when there is time to do what you most love!

My Experience with 600 Thread Count Sheets

I love my 600 thread count sheets, I truly do. I did not always have this kind of luxury — the comfort of 600 thread count sheets, and I am now aware of the difference that having a high thread count can make. Growing up with 300 thread count sheets may not seem like a big deal. It wasn’t one. But the sheets were just one thing — everything was a little chintzy. Oh, we were not poor. We always had enough to get by, even if just barely some of the time, but we were not well off by any means either. My 600 thread count sheets are not so much a luxury, as a symbol of the luxury that my comparative success has afforded me.

After all, when I was growing up, I had trouble sleeping. It was not because of the 300 count sheets that I couldn’t sleep, nonetheless, I remember what it was like. I would toss and turn all night in my little room, looking at the wallpaper design in the light coming through the curtains, and feel the 300 thread count sheets scratch my body and soak up my sweat as I tried desperately to sleep. I am not saying that I would have slept if I had had 600 thread count sheets. I was not kept up by the linens themselves. It is just that, things are different now.

I guess it all has to be taken in context. I have entered a new phase of my life now that this website has become somewhat successful. I sleep all night through on nice, 600 thread count sheets, and can finally afford to purchase some of the better things in life. My organic latex bed is comfortable and not lumpy like the one that I used to have earlier in life, and I have a warm, fluffy comforter on top of me when I sleep. Sometimes I lie in bed and just roll back and forth, enjoying the feeling of Egyptian cotton 600 thread count sheets against my skin. There is just nothing like sleeping in comfort, and my 600 thread count sheets give me comfort that I never had growing up. I guess that I am grateful for that — grateful for my parents for believing in me, but also grateful to myself for working so hard to succeed when I could have given up.

Hardy Boys Books: A Boyhood Tradition

The Hardy Boys are a national institution in America, an amateur sleuthing team of two brothers, Frank and Joe. Hardy Boys books have been staple fare for avid readers of detective adventures, especially loved by boys. The original series ran from 1927 to 1979, written under the pseudonym of Franklin W. Dixon. In fact, the stories were the idea of the Stratemeyer Syndicate publishing house, which were also responsible for the Nancy Drew and the Rover Boys series, amongst others. The characters and early plots were created by Edward Stratameyer and numerous ghostwriters were given the task of writing the books.

The series is unusual in undergoing frequent revisions. In 1959, the early Hardy Boys books received changes, such as shortening story length, updating everyday language and eliminating racial stereotypes. These changes ranged from minor tinkering to entire plots being jettisoned. Frank, who is a constant 18 years old, and younger brother Joe, at 17 years old live in the fictional town of Bayport, where their father, Fenton Hardy has gained a reputation as a private detective. “Never were so many assorted felonies committed in a simple American small town. Murder, drug peddling, race horse kidnapping, diamond smuggling, medical malpractice, big-time auto theft, even (in the 1940s) the hijacking of strategic materials and espionage, all were conducted with Bayport as a nucleus.” The boys follow in their father’s footsteps in solving crimes. The local police force request their help and they also assist their father in his cases on occasion.

The book covers are designed to capture the imagination and suggest mystery and danger with interesting titles such as The Bombay Boomerang, The Phantom Freighter and Danger on Vampire Trail. Hardy Boys books are available in 26 different languages and involve every sort of crime, including espionage, kidnapping and insurance fraud.

The adventures have appeared in many different formats, since the first run of titles. After the original series finished, publishers Simon and Shuster brought out the Hardy Brothers Digest, volumes in paperback that ended in 2005. This was followed by another series of Hardy boys books called The Hardy Boys: Undercover Brothers. Spin offs with a specific target readership in mind have appeared. The Casefiles series were written for older readers and contained more hard hitting storylines. The boys even used firearms and cursed occasionally. In contrast, Clues Brothers were intended for younger readers and more minor crimes were investigated. Some of the books have teamed the duo with other characters, including Nancy Drew and Tom Swift. They have also appeared in comic books and graphic novels.

In addition to books, the brothers have spawned merchandise, including dolls and board games. There have been numerous TV shows, adapted from the Hardy Boys books and an animated series and music albums. Many adults remember the brothers with affection and interest in them has continued into the 21st century.

I’m a public school teacher and I spend the majority of the day on my feet. The Dansko professional clogs offer great comfort along with style that I can live with. These aren’t the top-of-the-line high heel shoes that some professionals wear but they are perfect for a person in a humble profession.

Fashion and comfort rarely go hand-in-hand but I am pretty pleased with the way that my Dansko professional clogs look when I am wearing slacks. These shoes aren’t the best with knee-length skirts but they are cute when paired with longer skirts and dresses. They offer casual style and I don’t have to put with aching feet up at the end of the workday.

The soles are virtually slip-proof so I never worry about the slick hall floors in the school on rainy days. However, I don’t like wearing the Dansko professional clogs in the snow because they don’t wear as high as boots and they won’t do for deep drifts of snow. However, I find that they are ideal for most other weather conditions.

I also love to wear these shoes while I’m walking. I usually take a nice, brisk walk after school in the afternoon. Since I have a busy family life, I rarely think to pack along a pair of tennis shoes for my afternoon jaunt. The Dansko professional clogs are perfect for long strolls.

I should have looked into buying a pair of Dansko professional clogs after my sister told me about hers. She works long hours as a nurse in our local hospital. She said that the shoes would carry her through a double shift and she had no foot or leg pain. I have also seen the Dansko professional clogs on wait staff in my favorite restaurants, too.

You know that a shoe is comfortable if it is worn by people who are on their feet for long periods of time. I never really thought about how much time teachers really spend on their feet until I started working full time. Thank goodness I have the Dansko professional clogs to help me along.

I have a difficult time finding shoes that fit me comfortably, that’s why I was thrilled to find Dansko shoes. My favorite is the Professional style and know I can walk 3 miles in them. I happen to like clogs and they compliment my wardrobe just fine. If they were a bit cheaper, I’d have all the colors. For now, I have two pairs. For best fit, remember to buy a size up from your normal size.
